wineglass training week 6

Or is it week 5? I can’t really remember… The weird weekday holiday on Thursday threw me off a bit because I still had to work on Friday (despite one too many glasses of vino/champagne during the fireworks), and I also had work for my other RD job.

Minus a lot of detail, the new job is all I’ve been thinking about lately. It’s very different from my job at the hospital in that I can’t simply help “fix” the patient or situation by changing a tube feed or diet order; the “fixing” is often a long process and you don’t see instant results or fast improvements. This may be tough for me at the beginning because it seems easy to feel like you’ve failed the patient if they’re not getting better right away, and I have to remember to keep in mind every session/encounter is a step in the right direction, no matter how small.

Anyways, on to the running. I can’t say the week went well, but considering it a total failure would probably be a little hasty and mostly due to heat-induced delirium.

Monday: 50 minutes yoga

Tuesday: 8.25 miles, 30, 60, 90 second pick-ups at ~90% effort with equal rest, strength (abs, arms)
Wanted to do some sort of workout before the (disastrous) 5K on Thursday, and Coach John suggested this little gem to get the legs feeling a little speedy. The workout felt ok, but not great and the heat definitely got to me.

Wednesday: 8 miles easy, strength (abs, legs)

Thursday: 8.75 miles, 4.65 miles w/u, 5K race, 1 mile c/d, strength (abs, arms, legs)
Not gonna lie, thinking about this race still stings a little. It’s been a while since I’ve had a significantly shitty, not even close to PR race. It’s starting to bug me that there aren’t many decent races happening this summer that fit within my schedule, because I love mixing up training and having some races here and there. Anyone know of any NYC-area races (preferably 10K or more) in the next couple months??

Friday: 4 miles easy, 45 minutes yoga

Saturday: 13 miles, 5 x 30 second strides
Yes, it is hot. Knowing that all NYC-area (and beyond) runners are going through the same thing when stepping out the door and attempting to get a long run in without melting helps a little. While it was a bit slower than I would have liked, this run wasn’t a total disaster. One thing that got me through it was doing little mini pick-ups between stops at water fountains.

whatever works.

I also did strides at the end of the run for a tiny bit of speedwork and felt pretty good. That’s not to say I wasn’t super jazzed to get back to my apartment, blast the air conditioning and down several glasses of Nuun.

Sunday: 8 miles easy, strength (abs, legs)

,Total: 50 miles

I know it’s mostly because of the heat and less than stellar race, but I can’t help but feel like I’m not making much progress. Staying positive and moving forward with more miles and more workouts is what I’m trying to focus on, along with (duh) the simple joy that is the ability to run. Can’t forget that!

Question: Got any races planned during summer training??
