thanks, food, some running

Around this time last year, I was nearing the end of the dietetic internship and stressing out big time about when/if/how I would find a job as soon as possible afterwards. It was really hard for me to stay positive and even though this is my favorite time of year, I was pretty miserable.

I know it’s cheesy, but I can’t stop thinking about how much has changed in the past year and how thankful I am to have a great job (or two or three…) in the nutrition field as an RD. I’m still stressed about money (just made the first of oh so many student loan payments), but it’s a more manageable kind of stress and I’m already enjoying the holidays much more than last year. As per our tradition ever since I moved to NYC from Boston seven (!!) years ago, my sister came down and we celebrated Thanksgiving together here.

Something about watching it on TV when it’s happening just across the park doesn’t feel quite right.

After the parade we thawed out by watching the dog show under some blankets and cooked up a feast to be enjoyed with Susan.

always amazed at how much delicious can come out of my tiny kitchen

The quinoa dish I mentioned in my last post (from Thug Kitchen) was SO DELICIOUS. We really did not miss having stuffing, it was that good. Well done, Thug.

I had to work on Friday, but Saturday was filled with holiday fun at the Union Square Holiday Market and then a visit to the most Christmassy restaurant/bar in all the land called Rolf’s in Murray Hill. I think Rolf’s could make even the scroogiest of scrooges feel festive and cheerful, and I was feeling extra happy after two large German beers.

I loved running this week as much as all this other fun stuff, and even did a little workout on Tuesday. Brief recap:

  • Monday: 7.25 miles easy, 15 minutes yoga for runners
  • Tuesday: 8.5 miles, 5 x 1:30 minute hill repeats on Cat hill, strength (arms, abs). First workout post-NYCM, and these felt really good. I think workouts like this are a good way to get back into things and build some good strength and speed.
  • Wednesday: 30 minutes spin, 30 minutes elliptical, strength (legs, abs)
  • Thursday: 8 miles easy before the parade
  • Friday: 8 miles easy
  • Saturday: 11 miles easy, strength (abs)
  • Sunday: 7.5 miles easy

Total: 50.25 miles. For the most part, this was one of those weeks when running just felt good and I didn’t want stop and come home. Gah – why can’t it always be like that? This week I’ll do another workout and probably keep around the same mileage based on how I feel. I still don’t have any set “plan” in place, but I’d be lying if I said the running I’m doing now is not part of Operation Spring Marathon 2014. Guess there’s no better time than now to get started, eh? I had the day off today since I work this coming Saturday and visited Dr. Levine to work out some tightness and knots in the legs. I really don’t know what I did before discovering Dr. L and ART (other than become injured a lot more).

Since I’ve run every day since Thanksgiving, I’m debating taking part in the Runner’s World Holiday Running Streak, where you run at least 1 mile every day between now and New Year’s. Sounds like fun?

Question: Have you ever had a run streak? Favorite Thanksgiving leftover concoction?
